Ugg Australia - Women's
The roots of UGG Australia can be traced back to the sandy beaches of Byron Bay, where Australian surfers began wearing sheepskin footwear for warmth between sessions. Australia has an abundance of sheepskin, so when surfers started flocking to the area for the impressive breaks in the late 1960’s and early 70’s, it was natural that they turned to sheepskin to keep their feet warm and dry, even making themselves handmade “footies”. It was here the foundation was laid for a brand that would later become a worldwide phenomenon.
In 1978, Brian Smith landed in Southern California, the epicenter of casual living, with a bag of sheepskin boots and hope. He had fallen in love with the sheepskin experience, and was convinced the world would one day share his passion. So he founded UGG, and began selling his boots. They were an immediate sensation, and by the mid 1980’s, the UGG brand became a symbol of relaxed southern California culture.
People didn’t just like wearing UGG boots, they fell in love with them---the comfort---so the phenomenon grew, and Ugg became more than just a surf brand. When winter came, UGG boots showed up in ski lodges everywhere, and the brand began to symbolize the active, relaxed lifestyle. When the cultural shift happened in the 90’s, and people were embracing more casual living, the fashion world and its celebrities took notice, repositioning the brand as a symbol of luxuriousness and style. In three decades, the company has evolved from a sheepskin boot and clog manufacturer to a high-end fashion brand that covers the gamut of shoe styles---from slippers to sandals. Now Ugg is sold all over the world--and the love that began on the beaches has become an icon of casual style.
