Donald Pliner Shoes
Since visionary designer, Donald J Pliner, launched his line of luxury men’s and women’s footwear and accessories, his name has become synonymous with innovative design, high style and unprecedented comfort. Born in 1943, and raised with a "silver shoehorn" in his mouth, Donald Pliner worked as an apprentice to his father, Leo, at the family owned Pliner's Florsheim Family Shoe Stores. In 1967, he opened his own retail store, Pappagallo, in Beverly Hills, with great success.
In 1971, Donald rose to retail prominence with several apparel stores in the Beverly Hills area, serving as the first American store to carry famous European designers. He continued to innovate, developing a line of RBCC clothing, and in 1984, Intershoe recruited him to head up a new line of Spanish footwear called Glacè. True to form, he not only designed the collection, but he also directed and conceived the whole operation, resulting in the line being sold nationwide.
By 1989, Donald created his own line of footwear and accessories, designing fashion-forward footwear with comfort as his underlying goal. Creative director, Lisa Pliner, Donald's wife, works side-by-side with Pliner to develop each new collection, inserting her artist's vision into the designs, colors and textures. Today, the Donald J Pliner global brand has established an almost cult following. Initially attracted by the fashion-forward style, men and women return for its comfort and craftsmanship.
Inducted into the Footwear News Hall of Fame in 2004, Pliner has stayed true to his motto: "When the feet are uncomfortable, so is the mind, so is the body, so is the soul." In fact, Pliner still designs every pair of shoes himself, carefully screening each new design to ensure perfect fit and function.
